Best of Southeast Asia

Day 1. Arrive in Hanoi, Vietnam

Overnight – Capella Hanoi

Once upon a time, a modern jetliner landed at Vietnam Airport.

Your arrival and departure transfers can be reserved with your guest relations manager, who is assigned to you after you book your tour. We strongly recommend that our guests consider arriving a day earlier, as this allows you to recuperate from jetlag, and serves as insurance against international flight delays and cancellations. An additional night’s lodging at the (completely redesigned by Bill Bensley) historic Capella Hanoi, the city’s best hotel, can be added as part of the process as you reserve your tour.

If you are arriving a day earlier, your airport to hotel transfer will be provided a day earlier.
Our services begin with your luxury VIP greeting as you disembark at Hanoi airport. You are greeted as soon as you exit your plane and you will now be escorted through the complete arrival process, including immigration, baggage claim, and customs, and then you will be met by a Trehan Journeys Travel Facilitator or your Accompanying Vietnam Tour Director. You are then driven to your boutique luxury hotel where you will check-in if it is after 3pm. If your arrival is before 3pm, you can drop your bags off and use the facilities to freshen up, unless you have requested an additional day’s stay.

Your historic luxury hotel is the only such lodging in this city and its elegant interior is a delightful French-Vietnamese presentation of art, focusing on its earlier incarnation as the home of opera stars and visiting dignitaries. It has an enviable location in the iconic Old Quarter of Hanoi, and major attractions, great restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as the vibrant street scene, are just a few steps away, but not in any way intrusive. Hanoi is one of the world’s most fascinating cities to explore on foot, with an exceptionally vibrant street food scene, and its Old Quarter is always abuzz with activity and has an amazing energy that is near impossible to resist. Located on the banks of the Red River, Vietnam’s capital is a stylish and gracious city that retains a unique old-world charm and has some of Asia’s most striking colonial architecture.

Day 2. Hanoi

Overnight – Capella Hanoi

Start your exploration of Vietnam’s capital with a visit to the Temple of Literature. Built in 1070 as a Confucian temple and school, this complex became Vietnam’s first university six years later. Multiple courtyards, water tanks, temples, and unique architecture are what you will notice first. A unique sight here is 82 large stone slabs (with large tortoise shaped bases of stone) that have the names and other details of doctoral laureates of the university from 1442 to 1779. It is common to see local students at the temple in school groups throughout the year, and large groups of them are here dressed in their finest during graduation periods. Walk around the complex and its gardens and explore several temples housing beautiful statues of the university’s founders and greatest scholars.

Next up is the impressive Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex. This site is highly revered by the North Vietnamese, and consists of several structures, including Uncle Ho’s (Ho Chi Minh) modest house on stilts, and of course the iconic mausoleum itself. This granite structure stands prominently above the parade area and grandstand at a height of 70 feet and is surrounded by meticulously maintained lawns and gardens. Please note that we do not recommend viewing the preserved body of Ho Chi Minh, housed inside, as this requires a 45 minute (minimum) wait in line, and no photos are allowed. Next to the mausoleum is the beautiful Presidential Palace, built between 1900 and 1906 as the French Governor General of Indochina’s residence. The Palace is not open to the public, but you can stop here for a photo opportunity of the front left profile of the structure, as well as its beautiful gardens. Ho Chi Minh refused to live in the palace and had a simple home on stilts built in the gardens, which you will walk through to admire its simplicity and austerity.

Return to the old quarter and break for lunch. After lunch you will experience a guided walk through the fascinating old quarter. When Hanoi was much smaller, this area was the residential, commercial, and manufacturing hub. Each street was dedicated to locals practicing a particular trade, and this practice has continued until today, except the fact that there are far more street food outlets and cafes, adding even more color to an already fascinating sight. Your Tour Director will walk you through streets such as Hand Dong street (copper wares street) Hang Tre street (bamboo wares street), and so on. Some streets have names referring to trades no longer practiced, such as Hang Buom street (sails street), and are now focused solely on Vietnamese candy and cakes. There are streets full of flower decorators and sellers, and many of the streets still have temples, pagodas, and communal structures from old times.

Day 3. Hanoi

Overnight – Capella Hanoi

Start your day with a visit to a residential Hanoi district seldom experienced by foreigners. You will feel like you have traveled back in time into the 1960’s when Hanoi was a quaint capital populated mostly by modest workers. Wander around these narrow alleys covered in colorful market stalls, observe the locals as they go about their daily lives – you will experience Hanoi as only the locals do.

Return to the Old Quarter and after a break for lunch you will enjoy a cyclo (pedicab) ride around the Old Quarter. These ancient narrow streets are bustling with people and shops. Your ride ends at Hoan Kiem Lake in the city center.

The small urban lake is also known as The Lake of the Restored Sword, and the area surrounding it is Hanoi’s cultural center. Visit Ngoc Son Temple, situated on a small island in the photogenic lake, and observe the fascinating rituals that take place here – the devout visit it throughout the day.

In the early evening comes a fascinating performance of Water Puppetry, where Trehan Journeys guests will enjoy preferred seating. The Thang Long Puppet Theatre is Hanoi’s most famous because of the quality of the performers, and it is located on the banks of Hoan Kiem Lake, across from Ngoc Son Temple. This art form, which is unique to North Vietnam, originated in the 11th century. The combination of indigenous music, small fireworks, and the colorful wooden performers, as well as the accomplished musicians visible in the gallery, makes this spectacle a great introduction to North Vietnamese culture.

After the performance, you will enjoy a short walk to your hotel by the charming lake, walking past the locals as they dine on street food, an activity that is omnipresent at night all over the Old Quarter. By now you will start realizing that the Vietnamese take street food to a whole new level, even by Southeast Asia standards – people eating are everywhere, occupying sections of the pedestrian walkways, parks, sometimes taking over parts of the roads after sunset, enjoying the wares of scores of small street stalls.

Day 4. Hanoi – Haiphong - Ha Long Bay on Orchid Cruise

Overnight – Orchid Cruise Premium

Check-out from your hotel in the morning, and then you are driven 1.5 to 2 hours to Haiphong, a significantly shorter drive than to Ha Long, where almost all other cruises start. Upon your arrival you will join your fellow cruise travelers in a reception area where refreshments will be served. After a while you will be assisted in boarding your small luxury cruise ship which has among the largest cabins among the boats plying on Ha Long Bay. You will be in an upgraded balcony cabin with fabulous views.

The entire bay is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the world’s most spectacular seascapes. The water is relatively calm on the bay, and the scenic beauty is characterized by a vast area that is full of lush limestone (karst) hills jutting out of the ocean. A buffet lunch is served shortly after the cruise begins. Your cruise will visit some of the main attractions of Ha Long Bay that are also visited by other boats, but you will also spend quite a bit of time where most other cruises don’t go, in stunning locations that are a little off the beaten track.

You will have various excursions available during your cruise, including options to canoe, swim, explore amazing caves, and there will be a full schedule of activities on the ship that you can participate in. Very good Vietnamese and western cuisine options will be served throughout.

Day 5. HaLong Bay – Hue

Overnight – Azerai La Residence Hue

Wake up to stunning views and then enjoy a light breakfast, after which you have the option to experience this morning’s scheduled excursion. Return after the scheduled morning excursion, and a full brunch will be waiting for you. The boat now begins its leisurely cruise to the dock, giving you plenty of time for more relaxation and photography. Check out of your cabin and you are met by your Tour Director and chauffeur at the dock. You are then driven to Hanoi airport to board your flight to Hue, The City of Mist. Trehan Journeys feels that, in terms of history and culture, Hue is a more important destination than Ho Chi Minh City. Because of this and Hue’s proximity to Hoi An, we feel that tours that do not include Hue are depriving their travelers of a top tier destination.

You are greeted at Hue airport and you are driven to your art deco historic riverfront resort for check-in. By far Hue’s best lodging option, it was the residence of the French Resident Superieure in times past, and you have an upgraded suite since the rooms are rather small. Hue is known for its magnificent monuments built under the Nguyen Dynasty (1802 – 1945), and also famous for its amazing food, as well as its unique conical hats. Unlike Hanoi and Saigon, the city has a relaxed vibe, and evening walks by the Perfume River, and the delightful cafes that are found here, are highly recommended. The monuments that you will visit here make up one of Vietnam’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This honor was bestowed on the city in 1993 since it is such a fine example of an eastern feudal capital.

Day 6. Hue

Overnight – Azerai La Residence Hue

Your day will start in the morning with a visit to the impressive mausoleum of King Tu Duc (ruled 1848 – 1883). Close by is the next attraction, the unique mausoleum of King Khai Dinh (ruled 1916 – 1925). These ornate and colorful monuments, designed by the kings themselves, were also used as holiday retreats during their lifetimes. Next you will enjoy a guided walk-through older part of Hue, including a busy market located next to the river. After a lunch break you will continue your exploration with a visit to the Royal Citadel. The sprawling complex of palaces, fortifications and pagodas was, in its day, virtually impenetrable. The tour of this Imperial City features monuments such as the Flag Tower, Noon Gate, Nine Dynastic Urns, Nine Holy Cannons, Thai Hoa Palace (Palace of Supreme Harmony), and the Forbidden Purple City.

Day 7. Hue – Hoi An

Overnight – Four Seasons Resort the Nam Hai

You will be assisted with your check-out in the morning. Embark on a scenic 3.5-hour (approximately) drive to Hoi An. Some of this drive is through coastal fishing villages, and much of it is on one of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular roads, where you straddle the Pacific Ocean with amazing views on one side, and lush green hills on the other.

At the highest point of the journey, you will have a breathtaking view of the Pacific, and on the other side a view of the modern city of Da Nang and its bay. You will drive through the outskirts of Da Nang as you head towards Hoi An, and a brief photo opportunity stop will be at the beach zone that was a favorite for American soldiers during the Vietnam war, immortalized in the television series China Beach.

Arrive close to Hoi An in the early afternoon, in time for a slightly late lunch, and you will check-in at your gorgeous luxury oceanfront resort. Some tour operators lodge their guests at modern and crowded casino resorts in the Da Nang region, about an hour from Hoi An. Trehan Journeys prefers the Four Seasons Nam Hai, which is located just a short drive from Hoi An, with one of the finest beaches in Vietnam. This is luxury in the truest sense, with large villa’s designed for privacy, incredible cuisine, amazing service, multiple gorgeous pools, and a lot more. Although many of our guests ask for beach time at the end of their touring, it is definitely worth it to consider adding a day or two here, which we will be happy to accommodate upon request.

Hoi An is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the best-preserved ancient seaport in Southeast Asia. Trehan Journeys prefers not to take our guests to the ancient town during the late morning and early afternoon as, during those hours, it gets really crowded and noisy due to a large influx of tourist bus groups from the Da Nang resorts. However, guests who would like to, can have their Tour Director take them right after lunch. We recommend beginning your discovery of the ancient seaport in the late afternoon with a guided walk through the Japanese and Chinese Quarters of the tiny town. One of the highlights is the beautifully crafted and much-photographed Japanese Bridge. You will also visit a number of temples, pagodas, communal houses, traditional shops, and other places of interest in the small town. You can either head back to your resort in the early evening, or, those who want to continue experiencing the ancient town this evening can then have dinner at one of the delightful cafes and restaurants located on the river – the better restaurants have a distinctly French ambiance.

Day 8. Hoi An

Overnight – Four Seasons Resort the Nam Hai

My Son Sanctuary Excursion OR Fisherman and Farmer for a Half Day. You have two options for the first part of this day, or you can choose to enjoy one of the world’s finest beach resorts and relax. This decision needs to be made soon after you reserve your tour.

Option 1: My Son Excursion. Join your Tour Director for an excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of My Son Sanctuary. These remarkable structures lie about an hour away from Hoi An, and the structures go back as far as the 4th Century. It is one of the most important examples of Hindu influence in Southeast Asia. Although largely in a state of ruin today, My Son is often compared with other historical temple complexes in Southeast Asia, such as Angkor Wat of Cambodia or Ayutthaya of Thailand. You’ll be given a brief introduction to Cham history and culture, and its Hindu influence, and then you will visit the remains of the carefully crafted red brick temples replete with beautiful monuments and epitaphs.

Return to the Nam Hai and you are at leisure for a couple of hours for lunch and relaxation at your resort, until your bamboo platform dining experience.

OR

Option 2: Rural Farming & Fishing Life Experience. Join your Tour Director for a drive into the rural region away from modern civilization, along the Thu Bon River and its gorgeous Nipa Mangroves, passing lush farms and jungles. Soon you will arrive at the home and workshop of a local bamboo craftsman. Bamboo is widely used for a myriad of purposes in central coastal Vietnam, and there are a few expert craftsmen who sculpt and create with this amazing natural resource – your host this morning is one of the very best of these craftsmen. You will be shown the steps of the creative process, and you are encouraged to make a souvenir for yourself.

You will now proceed to visit a local fisherman’s family. We recommend that you use bicycles for this part of the excursion, although your vehicle will be headed to the same destination. The approximately 5-mile ride is on flat country roads with no traffic, and the scenery is extremely charming. At the end of the ride you will meet the friendly family and learn about their simple lifestyles, followed by a lesson in Vietnamese net fishing!

A very short drive after this will end at an organic farm, where again you will learn from the farmers on how they cultivate their crops. Enjoy some of their herbal tea and snacks, and then, if you so desire, participate in their daily activities for a little while.

From here you are driven back to your gorgeous lodging and you are at leisure for a couple of hours for lunch and relaxation at your resort, until your bamboo platform dining experience.

Bamboo Platform Dining Experience: At 4:30 PM your Tour Director will escort you to the banks of the river. You will be assisted in boarding one of the Hoi An regions iconic basket boats for a short cruise. After a few minutes you will arrive at your destination – a large floating bamboo raft, situated on a beautiful secluded part of the river, surrounded by tropical nature. Butlers and other staff will feed you unique local cuisine and fresh vegetables. At the end of the evening, at about 8 PM, you will be driven back to your resort.

Day 9. Hoi An – Da Nang – Saigon

Overnight – The Riverie Saigon

Check-out of your resort in the morning and you are driven to Da Nang airport, crossing the charming Dragon Bridge on the way, where you will board the noon flight to Saigon. Upon arrival, there is a break for a late lunch if you so desire, as airplane food will have been served on your flight.

From the airport area you can go directly to your lodging in Saigon, or proceed to Cu Chi, located in the countryside north of Saigon – this decision will need to be made soon after you reserve your tour. This area is famed for its elaborate network of over 200 kilometers of three-story underground tunnels hand-dug by local people during the Vietnam War.
You have the option to experience climbing down into a tunnel and crawling around to get a taste of how the North Vietnamese soldiers (Viet Cong) lived during the latter part of the war. There are displays of weaponry that was used, as well as life-sized statues of the North Vietnamese soldiers depicting the lives they lived.

After this experience you are driven to Saigon where you are assisted with check-in at Vietnam’s most luxurious city hotel, the Reverie, also ranked as Saigon’s top hotel. You are in the heart of Saigon’s downtown (District 1), and restaurants, bars, and shopping are right at your doorstep, as are historical structures such as the Opera House. Located near the mouth of the Mekong, this city was once nothing more than swampland inhabited by a few Khmer people. Today it is Vietnam’s largest and most metropolitan city, with its official name – Ho Chi Minh City. The city of over 9 million people is a prototypical large Asian city with an impressive modern skyline overlooking busy streets overflowing with, for western visitors, chaotic scooter, motorcycle and other traffic.

Day 10. Saigon

Overnight – The Riverie Saigon

You will start your day in the morning with a visit to the Reunification Palace. This was the headquarters of the United States supported South Vietnamese government and has been left largely as it appeared on the day the Viet Cong’s tanks crashed through the gate and claimed victory for the North. The original furniture, equipment rooms, and war rooms remain untouched, all the way down to the rotary phones on the desks and strategic maps on the walls. In the middle of the crowded city, this large structure and its vast grounds are a fascinating time warp taking you back to the early 1970’s.

Next, enjoy a visit to the beautiful colonial building housing the Central Post Office, with its amazing collection of century old western telegraphs and other machines. This is an active place of business, and the gorgeous antique interior includes wooden phone booths and counters that the locals will be standing at while buying services.

After lunch you will enjoy a walk-through Saigon, including the famous shopping street of Dong Khoi. The walk starts at Notre Dame Cathedral and leads you to the Municipal Theater, after which you are driven to your spectacular hotel to enjoy lunch and the amazing facilities for a little while.

Brewery and Local Dining Experience: In the evening you will join your Tour Director for a short walk to Pasteur Street and the most famous craft beer taproom in Vietnam. Meet the brewer, learn about the marriage between this western practice and local ingredients, and sample several brews. You will then walk a little further to a nice outdoor restaurant located on the rooftop of an old apartment block. Dinner will be a diverse assortment of delicious Vietnamese home cooked favorites, and your hosts and Tour Director will answer any questions that you may have about the ingredients and flavors of the dishes being offered.

Day 11. Saigon - Siem Reap, Cambodia

Overnight – Bensley Collection Shinta Mani

You are assisted with your check-out in the morning and you will take a short drive to the War Remnants Museum. We do not recommend this museum to guests who might get upset by gruesome war photos, descriptions, and exhibits. Also, please bear in mind that the atrocities exhibited are those attributed to American soldiers, during what Vietnam calls the American War. For those that want to forego the museum, you can enjoy your spectacular hotel until the mid-morning or explore surrounding District 1 with your Tour Director.

In the mid-morning you will be driven to the colorful and interesting Binh Tray Market, where the locals come to shop for produce, fruit, poultry, meat and seafood. After a walk to explore the indoor market, you will return to Saigon’s downtown, where we recommend a slightly late lunch at the highest rated upscale Vietnamese restaurant in Saigon, Vietnam House. After lunch you are driven to the airport where your Vietnamese Tour Director will introduce you to your VIP Airport Concierge, bid farewell, and then you will be escorted through all departure processes and assisted in boarding your flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Arrive in Siem Reap and you are greeted at the airport by your VIP Airport Concierge as you disembark your plane and you will now be escorted through the complete arrival process, including immigration, baggage claim, and customs. You are then driven to what many past guests call the best hotel on our planet, The Bensley Siem Reap. You will be staying in a spectacular Pool Villa designed by Bill Bensley and every need and whim will be catered for by your butler and the other staff. We strongly recommend our guests consider adding a day or two more to enjoy the incredible experience at this 10 Villa Hotel. We also recommend considering adding three days to visit the exquisite Bill Bensley Wild Tented Camp in Cardamom National Park – https://wild.bensleycollection.com/. Please note that your accomplished and knowledgeable Guide is an expert on the history and archaeology of the wonders at Siem Reap, for those who would like time with local archaeologist authorities, roughly 3-hour sessions can be added in advance at an additional expense.

Day 12. Siem Reap

Overnight – Bensley Collection Shinta Mani

Rising well before dawn, proceed for your exploration of the most famous temple in Southeast Asia, Angkor Wat. Believed to be the world’s largest religious building, this 12th century temple is a perfect fusion of symbolism and symmetry and a source of pride and strength to all Khmers. Arrive at the monuments entrance before the sun rises and walk to a location near the temple, where your sunrise view of Angkor Wat is across lotus ponds. This is the best time to visit Angkor Wat because it is the least crowded during the early morning, and watching the sunrise over the awe-inspiring complex is an experience not to be missed. After admiring the sunrise, you will proceed into the massive complex to discover its incredible structures and plethora of intricacies, which will be highlighted by your Tour Director.

After exploring Angkor Wat you are driven back to your resort for some time to freshen up and to have breakfast. In the late morning you will explore the immense walled city of Angkor Thom and its multiple awe-inspiring monuments built at a scale that is simply amazing. Following the occupation of Angkor by the Chams from 1177 to 1181, the king decided to build an impregnable fortress at the heart of his empire.

The causeway is lined by an intricate bridge depicting the Churning of the Ocean of Milk from Hindu mythology in which the Devas (gods) and Asuras (devils) are engaged in tug of war with a Naga (seven-headed serpent) to obtain the elixir of immortality. Begin your visit at the Terrace of the Leper King. This intricately carved platform was the royal crematorium and the statue that was originally thought to be the leper king is now believed to be Yama, the god of death.

You will continue along the Terrace of Elephants, originally used as a viewing gallery for the king to preside over parades, performances, and sporting events. At the southern end lies the Baphuon, once of the most beautiful temples at Angkor, dating from the 11th century. It has undergone a massive renovation by the French and is now once again open for viewing. Next up is the enigmatic and enchanting temple of the Bayon. At the exact center of Angkor Thom, this is an eccentric expression of the creative genius and inflated ego of Cambodia’s most celebrated king. Its 54 towers are each topped off with the four faces of Avalokiteshvara (Buddha of Compassion), all of which bear more than a passing resemblance to the king himself.

There is a break for lunch after which you will visit mystical Ta Prohm, which has been abandoned to the elements. Left as it was discovered by French explorer Henri Mouhout in 1860, the tentacle-like tree roots here are slowly strangling the surviving stones. This was one of the settings for the original Tomb Raider movie. Complete your exploration of this section of Angkor’s wealth of monuments with a visit to another temple that makes you feel like you have traveled back in time – Preah Khan. This large temple has also been left unrestored for the most part and is a fascinating maze of narrow passageways and windows that each offers their own unique view into the past.

Day 13. Siem Reap

Overnight – Bensley Collection Shinta Mani

Join your Tour Director for a very scenic 75 to 90-minute drive through the Cambodian countryside to the amazing temple complex of Beng Mealea. Arrive and start your exploration of this massive early 12th century complex. Although partially in ruins, much of the complex is still in good condition, and some of the trees and vegetation have intermingled with the structure to create a sight that is unmatched by other similar monuments in Southeast Asia. Due to its distance from Siem Reap, this surreal complex attracts significantly fewer tourists than Angkor Wat and the temples in the city of Angkor Thom. From Beng Mealea you will head towards Tonle Sap stopping for lunch along the way.

Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, the lake is connected to a river of the same name. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the area is one of the most biodiverse in the world, and its waters were what sustained the magnificent Angkor civilization, and others before that. The lake loses much of its water during winter, and when the rains come in the late spring/early summer, the lake fills up and rises over 30 feet. You will board your boat and explore the lakeside fishing community of Kampong Khleang, the largest town on the lake, and no doubt be impressed by the network of houses on up to 30-foot-tall stilts, lush farmlands, and small fishing communities. You will have the opportunity to observe how the locals live and work in this unique environment. Unlike the very touristy and hawker-filled village of Chong Kneas, where almost all other tours go, Kampong Khleang offers a more authentic experience.

In the evening you will join your Cambodia Tour Director for a fascinating walk through the local night market where tourists and locals shop for all sorts of items, while enjoying street food.

Day 14. Siem Reap – Luang Prabang

Overnight – Rosewood

After checking-out you will head to the Banteay Srei Temple Complex. Although it attracts more visitors than Beng Mealea, it is less crowded than the main complexes in the Siem Reap Region. Banteay Srei is another Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva, and, at more than a thousand years of age, it is older than almost all of the more significant temples in the Siem Reap Region. Constructed from hard Red Sandstone, this complex is a study in detail. It is small when compared to the main complex’s structures in Siem Reap, or even the Beng Mealea Complex. However, the intricacy of its original sculptures, especially the detailed figures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, and the voluptuous and beautiful Apsaras, is unsurpassed even among all the wonders found in the Angkor region. Some parts of this temple, more so than in other Angkor Region monuments, are replicas due to theft over the last few decades, before adequate protection was added.

From Banteay Srei you will head, stopping along the way for a slightly late lunch, to the Siem Reap airport, where you will be assisted in boarding your flight to Luang Prabang. Bid farewell to your Cambodia Tour Director at the airport, where you will be introduced to your VIP Airport Concierge and then be escorted through all departure processes.

Upon arrival at Luang Prabang, you are greeted at the airport by your VIP Airport Concierge as you disembark your plane and you will now be escorted through the complete arrival process, including immigration, baggage claim, and customs. You will be introduced to a Trehan Journeys Travel Facilitator or your Laos Tour Director, who will usher you to your vehicle. You are driven to your boutique colonial hotel and assisted with check-in. Your suite in the main building of the top-rated hotel has great views and allows for easy walks into historic Luang Prabang whenever you may feel like it.

All of Luang Prabang’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers visitors a perfect micro chasm of the landscapes and culture of Southeast Asia. Its incredible utopian setting provides venues for a large and diverse array of activities, including Mekong River explorations, waterfalls, and much more. UNESCO describes Luang Prabang as “an outstanding example of the fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those built by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its unique, remarkably well-preserved townscape illustrates a key stage in the blending of these two distinct cultural traditions.

Day 15. Luang Prabang

Overnight – Rosewood

An optional pre-sunrise start today gives you the opportunity to participate in one of Luang Prabang’s most iconic traditions: donating food to the local monks (Tak Bat). Your Tour Director will assist you in procuring the groceries and instruct you on the process as the monks walk by silently and open their baskets for you to place your contribution in them. The monks have been collecting their day’s meals in this manner for centuries. Afterward enjoy a walk through the nearby fresh food market. The busy market is a hive of activity as locals purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish caught from the Mekong River. Return to the hotel for breakfast and a bit of leisure time to freshen up.

Late Morning: Join your Tour Director for a tour of the charming old town. You will visit Wat That Luang, where you have the option to communicate with a senior monk. You will then stop at Wat Visoun, which, because of its design, is known as The Watermelon Stupa. Next you will visit the magnificent Wat Xiengthong. This monument is a photographer’s delight because of its classical Luang Prabang architecture, with the roof sweeping close to the ground.

You will also visit the impressive Arts and Ethnology Center which provides great insights into the ethnic mix and culture of Laos. The last stop of this excursion is the quaint Royal Palace Museum, which offers a good overview of the local history.
There is a break for lunch, after which you are driven to the gorgeous set of waterfalls at Kuang Si. Upon your arrival at the entrance, you have the option of a quick visit to the small bear rescue center at the base of the falls. Proceed onward into the jungle on well- maintained walkways, until you arrive at the first small set of falls. The base of these falls has a beautiful natural blue swimming hole the size of a large public pool – swimming is permitted at all the falls, so you may want to dress appropriately. Continue on your leisurely walk through the jungle, making your way from waterfall to waterfall, to one idyllic swimming hole after another. The finale is a stunning 200 ft. cascade that is the most impressive of the collection of waterfalls. You are driven back to Luang Prabang at the end of this adventure.

Day 16. Luang Prabang

Overnight – Rosewood

This morning you will depart Luang Prabang on a very scenic rural drive for the village of Ban Don Ngurn. Upon arrival you will board a private boat for a cruise down the beautiful Nam Ou River. The cruise takes you by stunning limestone karst scenery, offering many photo opportunities. The scenery along the river is captivating as you cruise by picturesque landscapes and the occasional tribal hamlet. Continue along the Nam Ou until it merges with the mighty Mekong River. Pay a visit to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. Although the caves are not as massive as some of the famous caves in Southeast Asia, they are very interesting because Buddhists have been venturing here for centuries to place Buddha statues in them. The lower cave contains the largest part of the collection, well over 3000 statues, and hence a fairly arduous climb up some steep stairs to the upper cave is purely optional. After your visit to the caves, you will head back toward Luang Prabang, with two or three stops (depending on your preference) along the way.

Your first stop will be for a delicious picnic on the scenic banks of the Nam Ou River, organized by one of Luang Prabang’s best restaurants. Continue the cruise until you stop at Ban Vanglae, a Lu tribe village where traditional weaving and dyeing is the main occupation of the villagers. Your last optional stop on the cruise back down river to Luang Prabang is at Ban Nongxai, an artisan’s village. At the end of this adventure, you are driven back to Luang Prabang.

Early Evening: You have the option of a guided excursion to Phousi Mountain. This is a hill in the center of the old town that provides a breathtaking view of the town and the Mekong River at sunset. This excursion involves a fairly rigorous climb up 350 paved steps, but the view from the top is an amazing photographic opportunity, as it showcases the remarkable beauty of Luang Prabang.

Day 17. Luang Prabang – Bangkok

Overnight – Mandarin Oriental

You are assisted with check-out in the mid-morning and driven to the airport to board your flight to Bangkok – bid farewell to your Laos Tour Director at the airport, where you will be introduced to your VIP Airport Concierge and then be escorted through all departure processes. Arrive in Bangkok and you are greeted at the airport by your VIP Airport Concierge as you disembark your plane and you will now be escorted through the complete arrival process, including immigration, baggage claim, and customs. You are then driven to your riverfront hotel for assisted check-in.

Your lodging in Bangkok is one of Asia’s premier boutique hotels, and you have an upgraded suite with a partial river view. The service and amenities are unmatched and your designer lodging has a large priceless collection of far eastern antique sculptures and art, superior to many museums. The location is in the quiet historical zone of the city, about a 20-minute drive from the hotel zone that has hundreds of riverfront and other hotels, but it is the same distance, as those other hotels, to Bangkok’s main attractions, such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. The giant metropolis of Bangkok is a fascinating blend of modern skyscrapers, congested traffic, beautiful and ornate Wats (temples), incredible street food, and a lot more. The colorful Thai culture and the easygoing local lifestyle make this unique city even more interesting.

Day 18. Bangkok

Overnight – Mandarin Oriental

Your first stop this morning will be the Grand Palace complex, which has been the state residence of Thai royalty since 1782 and is still used for official events. Your Tour Director will show you some of the more interesting highlights of the complex. The collection of buildings serves as a nice introduction to Thai architecture and provides many great photo opportunities.

Just one of the several stops you will make within the complex is Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This is the most sacred Buddhist temple (wat) in all of Thailand. Except for the Thai King, no other person is allowed to touch this statue. The King changes the statue’s cloak three times each year to correspond to the summer, winter, and rainy seasons.

Next, you will visit Wat Pho, known also as The Temple of the Reclining Buddha, adjacent to the Grand Palace. This large statue is 50 feet (15 meters) high and 140 feet (43 meters) long and is covered in gold leaf. The bottoms of the feet are inlaid with mother of pearl, divided into 108 panels depicting the 108 auspicious symbols used by the Buddha.
A colorful interlude during this morning’s exploration will be a walk-through Bangkok’s wholesale flower market, where millions of colorful displays are spread throughout. Flowers are an integral part of Thai society, and the plethora of fragrant colors amidst the extremely busy shops and stalls are a delight to experience.

After lunch you will enjoy an urban excursion by a private long-tailed boat to discover the canals of Thonburi. The people of Thailand, including the residents of Bangkok, have always lived a lifestyle that is primarily dependent on their rivers. You will explore the intricate network of canals, or Khlongs, as you cruise past colorful homes and other structures. Unlike the tourist areas that you visit with most tours, this adventure will offer great insights into how the locals live. You will see women washing clothes and utensils in the water, children swimming, locals throwing food to teeming schools of fish (considered a religious offering), and a lot more.

Stop at Baan Silapin (Artists House), the beautifully decorated centuries-old structure on a residential canal, for a brief visit. This succession of buildings is a whimsical art gallery showcasing local creative talents. Your last stop in the canals will be a quick visit to the hidden Museum of Royal Barges, which houses a few of the ornately carved and painted barges used by Thai Royalty. As you pull out of the canals into the river for your cruise back, you will enjoy great photo opportunities of beautiful Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn), Bangkok’s iconic riverside monument.

Your hotel offers private Thai cuisine classes conducted by its master chefs and we can schedule one for you upon request.

Day 19. Bangkok

Overnight – Mandarin Oriental

If this is a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, your day will start in the mid-morning and end in the late evening, after a visit to the picturesque Amphawa Floating Market. If it is another day of the week, your day will start early and end in the mid to late afternoon, and the floating market you visit will be your first stop this morning. The description for the day is written based on visiting Amphawa Floating Market.

Continue your exploration of Thailand with an excursion to a fascinating area located a little over an hour away to the southwest of Bangkok. After a scenic drive through pastoral countryside (after exiting Bangkok) you will arrive at a restaurant where you will break for lunch. After lunch you will experience the famous Maeklong Railway Market, also known as the Umbrella Pulldown Market. This name is derived from the fact that the vendors spread their wares and awnings to cover the railroad tracks, and then everything is pulled back upon a trains approach – your time here will be during one such train arrival.

The market is one of the largest fresh seafood markets in Thailand and also sells a host of other local food specialties, as well as other goods, including clothing and souvenirs. Next you will enjoy a very unique experience as you cruise through the dense mangrove forests of Samut Songkhram. You will visit one of the unique oyster farms of the region, and will encounter the local monkeys that are expert swimmers, providing visitors with great photo opportunities. All this while you will be experiencing rural Thailand, cruising past remote villages and fishermen going about their work.

The picturesque Amphawa Floating Market has an incredible variety of Thai food available, from fresh seafood to cut fruits of all sorts, a lot of fried street food, and the stalls at the bank of the river are peddling the unavoidable local souvenirs. The food boats are usually manned by colorfully attired Thai women, and the culinary options are charmingly well presented. After the floating market you will enjoy the scenic drive back to Bangkok.

Day 20. Bangkok - Chiang Rai & Anantara Luxury Elephant Camp

Overnight – Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp

You are assisted with check-out in the slightly early morning and driven to the airport to board your flight to Chiang Rai. Arrive in Chiang Rai and you are greeted at the airport and driven to a monument that is nothing like anything you have ever seen before, Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple. This recent striking creation of a famous local architect is extremely ornate and beautiful in its design and houses an impressive array of intricate sculptures.

This is the attraction that gets the most visitors in the Chiang Rai region and for good reason – it is completely different from any other monument in Southeast Asia.
Chiang Rai, Thailand’s northernmost city, was the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom and today is the commercial center of the Golden Triangle region. The mountainous region of the north has been significantly influenced by Burmese and Chinese culture due to its proximity to those nations. The culture, language, and food, even the physical appearance of the local Lanna descendants, all stand in subtle contrast to the rest of Thailand.

Next you are driven to your home for the next two nights – The Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, where you are assisted with your check-in after you have lunch at the all-inclusive resort. From now until we pick you up in the late morning two days later, all services are provided by the resort staff. Included in your stay at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort is your choice of one complimentary activity per day, for a total of two during your stay.

You will need to make this selection with us soon after reserving your tour, or you can do so at the camp, subject to availability. We recommend that you consider scheduling both activities on the same day, the day after your arrival at the resort.

Complimentary Daily Activity:

  •  Elephant Camp Experience
  • Golden Triangle Discovery Excursion
  • Spice Spoons Cooking Class
  • 90 Minute Spa Treatment

Other inclusions at Anantara Camp include:

  • Daily breakfast in the hotel’s main restaurant
  •  Lunch and Dinner at the hotel’s restaurant of your choice
  • Beverages (select range of non-alcoholic drinks, house wines, beer, and spirits)
  • In room Minibar

Day 21. Anantara Luxury Elephant Camp

Overnight – Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp

You are at leisure to enjoy your selected experiences at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort – all services are provided by the camp staff. For guests who truly enjoy nature, including the spectacular three country views from your room and much of the resort, additional days can be added at your camp at the time of tour reservation. Each additional day will include any one of the activities listed above.

Day 22. Chiang Rai – Chiang Mai

Overnight – 137 Pillars House

Check-out of your resort by noon and join your Tour Director for the drive to a group of rural villages in the hills near Chiang Rai. You can enjoy lunch at your resort on self-pay basis before you depart, or have a late lunch break along the way.

Hill Tribes and today’s reality – many travel companies continue to paint a picture of the unique traditional clothing, jewelry, and lifestyles of Southeast Asia’s hill tribes as if these have remained unchanged over the last few decades. The truth is quite the opposite. The hill tribes were an integral part of poppy farming for a long time and supported themselves and their unique lifestyles through its cultivation. About six decades ago the revered late King of Thailand decided to end the drug trade in this region issuing a series of Royal Proclamations and Royal Projects to uplift and empower the tribal people. His goal was to provide them with alternative livelihoods and education for their children so that they could assimilate into the rest of Thailand’s population. Although some still live in their villages and farm, their lifestyles have changed; they dress like other Thai people do, practice modern cultivation methods, live in brick and mortar houses, speak the Thai dialect that is local to their region, ride motorbikes and drive pickup trucks as part of their daily routine.

There are a handful of locales where the tribal communities have been partially preserved in their original form with support from government funded agencies. The goal is to provide the few who do not want to change a place to live, while also making them self-sufficient. Our guests visit one of such small group of villages, located near Chiang Rai. During this excursion, you will pay a visit to the Kiran (longneck), Akka, Lahu, and Yao tribes. Your Tour Director will introduce you to some of the villagers and explain the origins and customs of these unique tribal peoples. These villagers still honor their heritage by dressing in the vibrant and colorful garments unique to their people. The entry fees to this set of villages supports the hill tribe residents of the village, and the tribal residents also offer hand crafted items for sale, although they are not the least bit aggressive in pushing their wares. A few people condemn such village tours as being degrading to the tribal people. They ignore the reality that this is still a good way for these few tribals to earn a living in the present, without completely changing their lifestyles. They also are educating visitors about their culture and customs.

In the mid-afternoon you will proceed on the scenic drive through the hills in the Chiang Rai region as you head to Chiang Mai. Arrive at Chiang Mai and you are assisted with your check-in at your boutique resort, which happens to be the best luxury lodging within Chiang Mai. Your small resort is a 20-minute walk (or 5-minute tuk-tuk ride, easily available) will take you to downtown Chiang Mai where there are scores of cafés, restaurants, and bars.

The Lanna Kingdom flourished in northern Thailand between the 12th – 15th centuries, and Chiang Mai was the longtime capital of the kingdom after it was moved from Chiang Rai. The city is the second largest city in Thailand, and the cultural capital of the north.

Possessing great natural beauty and a host of outdoor activities and parks on its outskirts, the city itself is a fascinating combination of unique architecture, ancient history with its associated rituals, and a modern metropolis. Chiang Mai is one of Asia’s best cities to explore on foot, with a bustling street food scene. Your hotel offers private Thai cuisine classes conducted by its master chefs and we can schedule one for you upon request.

Day 23. Chiang Mai

Overnight – 137 Pillars House

You will explore the historic walled city of Chiang Mai. This tour demonstrates the architectural diversity and blending of styles that the Lanna were known for. It is also a great way to get familiar with the city, should you decide to go out during the evenings and explore. Included are visits to some of the iconic old temples of ancient Chiang Mai, including Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Chiang Man.

After lunch, proceed on the short drive up to Doi Suthep, the hill on the edge of the city that dominates the Chiang Mai skyline. Once at the top, you will find the 309 stairs up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, which are flanked on each side by beautiful Nagas running the entire length of the stairs. You also have the option of taking a large elevator (which does usually have a short waiting line) up to the Wat. Once at the top, enjoy the spiritual ambience of one of Thailand’s most holy places, as well as some superb sunset views of the city. You will see devout Thai’s circling the main stupa in a ritualistic manner, and many others on their knees in deep prayer.

Chiang Mai has a great street market every night, with the largest market occurring on Sunday nights. Join your Tour Director this evening for an excursion to Chiang Mai’s most exciting and extensive night market. There is a fascinating street food scene and the crowds and activity are another one of Southeast Asia’s amazing photo opportunities.

Day 24. Chiang Mai

Overnight – 137 Pillars House

Enjoy an excursion to spectacular Doi Inthanon mountain and national park, which includes a visit to the most photographed attraction in Northern Thailand, Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon and Naphaphonphumisiri, which are the massive and gorgeous Chedis that are the subject of the most popular photos that travel journals and websites use for the Chiang Mai region, and are not situated in Chiang Mai, but close to the peak of Doi Inthanon. You will also visit other major attractions inside Doi Inthanon National Park, which is a protected area that is home to the highest mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon.

Doi Inthanon is a superb national park full of majestic waterfalls, lush green valleys, terraced paddy fields, fruit, flower and vegetables crops, and ethnic communities living happily and comfortably in their natural environment.

Once at the peak you will admire the views and then enjoy an easy trek through the mist laden virgin forest and be fascinated with the unique flora that is found here. After this adventure you will be driven downhill and lunch will be at the Royal Project Kitchen (with fresh ingredients from project farmers), while admiring the beautiful surroundings and views. After lunch there will be two more not-to-be-missed experiences on your way back to Chiang Mai.

First you will stop at the two massive colorful Chedis, which are dedicated to the Beloved Late King and the Revered Queen and are located in a magical spot with lush undulating hills and spectacular views. The immaculate terraced gardens with a plethora of colorful exotic flowerbeds that surround the Chedis (which face each other) make for a breathtaking locale.

The second fascinating stop as you head down the mountain is the Royal Projects Highway Market run by the Hill Tribes of the Doi Inthanon region. You will stop and walk around the outdoor stalls selling fruits, produce, nuts and other items organically grown by the simple and now well-to-do tribal locals, some of whom will be dressed in their unique clothing. This market, its wares, and the tribal people that grow and sell here are a growing testament of the success of the Late King’s vision and efforts.

As in Chiang Rai, up until the 1960s, poppy fields were widespread in this region, and hill tribe villagers were working as laborers for opium producers and smugglers. King Bhumibol (Rama IX) initiated drastic reforms in the region to put an end to it, and this region was the beginning of the Royal Projects. These projects were highly beneficial to the whole region and to the ethnic communities who earlier had almost been slaves of the drug barons, and many of them were addicted to opium. Besides the Thai Army moving against the drug lords, the Royal Projects granted the Hill Tribes their own land to cultivate, free seeds, tools, and all other resources needed to make them succeed in becoming successful natural farmers. Now, over half a century later, the results of the Late King’s vision have brought happiness to everyone involved.

Day 25. Chiang Mai - International Departure

You are assisted with your check-out at your choice of time before noon (depending on the departure timing of your international flight) and driven to the Chiang Mai airport and assisted in boarding your flight. Please note that international flights have check-in requirements that require you to be at their check-in counter approximately 2.5 to 3 hours (for coach), and 2 hours for premier classes, before that flight departs so Trehan Journeys will allow for unexpected delays on the flight from Chiang Mai to your departure city.

THE FOLLOWING DEPARTURE OPTIONS ARE OFFERED FOR GUESTS NEEDING GUIDANCE ON THIS SUBJECT. Please note that almost all international flights depart from Thailand’s airports either very late at night or early in the morning.

Option 1 for International Flights from Bangkok option: Those departing from Bangkok fly there from Chiang Mai with their Tour Director and, upon arrival, before bidding you farewell, your Tour Director will either assist you in connecting with your VIP Airport Concierge, or, if your flight is much later, assist you in checking in at the only upscale hotel connected with the airport. Since many flights depart Bangkok very late at night or in the early morning, this option can be added to your tour once you have confirmed your international flights. You have the option of a hotel shuttle, or a 5 to 10-minute walk on a covered walkway. When you return to the airport for your international flight, you will meet your VIP Airport Concierge at a prearranged location and then be escorted through all departure processes. Our services will end when your Tour Director bids you farewell.

Option 2: International Flights from Chiang Mai option: A couple of quality airlines, Korean Air and Cathay Pacific (the latter through its regional subsidiary), offer international departures from Chiang Mai, which will result in your not needing a flight to Bangkok, and a nominal reduction in your Trehan Journeys Journey flight costs. In this option, if your departure from Chiang Mai is going to be later in the day, you can either ask for an additional night’s stay, or to explore the city with your Tour Director until it is time for your airport transfer for your international flight. When you are driven to the airport for your international flight, you will be introduced to your VIP Airport Concierge and then be escorted through all departure processes.

Another Option for Day 25: Chiang Mai – Choices between Thailand’s Best Oceanfront Resorts in Phuket, Krabi OR Koh Samui. Pricing for this option is quoted upon request based on the number of days you would like at your selected resort, and will include flights and transfers to the resorts, and, if needed, a flight back to Bangkok for your departure international flight. VIP Airport Concierge services are included upon your arrival at the beach destinations, and can be added for a return flight to Bangkok, upon request. Recommended resorts, room types, and international departure options are listed after all lodging, inclusion, and pricing details for the main tour. Upgrades and downgrades in room/suite/villa type are available at our preferred resorts upon request.

There are nonstop flights available from Chiang Mai to Phuket, Krabi and Samui airports. Your departure timing from your Chiang Mai resort will be in the morning and will depend on which of the three destinations you select.

You are assisted with your check-out in the morning and driven to the Chiang Mai airport where you are assisted in boarding your flight to Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui – your Tour Director will bid farewell after escorting you through check-in and security, and then board their own flight back to Bangkok.
